However, the current patent system in the United States is receiving criticism on multiple fronts due to the theory that the system allows entities called 'patent trolls' to manipulate small businesses and extort money through patent litigation. The true prevalence of patent trolls is unclear, but several important pieces of legislation have been proposed to combat these patent trolls, as well as a "Prize System for Invention", which rewards innovative companies with monetary prizes instead of patents.</onlyinclude>
