Julia Wang is a 19 year old student currently working as a Research Assistant for the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy's McNair Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Julia currently lives in the Houston area and attends Rice University.

Early Life

Julia was born in Fairfax, Virginia, to parents Yanchun and Lei Wang. Her father and mother immigrated from Beijing, China, where Yanchun was a professor at Tsinghua University, in 1994 with Julia's sister Lisa to Ames, Iowa, and moved to Fairfax in 1996. When Julia was 3 months old, the Wang family moved to the Bay Area, eventually settling in San Jose, California, where Yanchun and Lei work as software engineers in the Silicon Valley. Julia grew up speaking both English and her parents' native language of Mandarin, and later learned French during her middle and high school years.

Education

Julia is a sophomore student majoring in Economics, Policy Studies, and Visual and Dramatic Arts at Rice University. She resides at the residential college of Baker and is also pursuing a minor in Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities.

Organizational Involvement

Aside from interning at the McNair Center, Julia is involved in many organizations at Rice University. She serves as the Policy Competition Chair for the Baker Institute Student Forum, the Creative Director for the Rice Entrepreneurship Club, the Sports Editor of the Campanile Yearbook, and a Communications Committee member for the Rice University Student Association.

Work Experience

Julia has worked as an Operations Coordinator of Technology and Data for the non-profit Teach For America, a lifeguard for Rice University, and a private tutor in French, writing, and calculus.
