Much of my work on the economics of innovation focuses on patents, in part because data on patenting is so readily available.

Patenting Pages

The following pages are related to patenting:

Patent Licensing and Patent Pools

Coauthors and project contributors can view the Patent Pool Licensing Project pages. Some information on this project may be made publicly available shortly.

Patent Litigation

I am currently considering building economic models of 'defensive patenting' and patent litigation. The Patent Litigation page provides links to some articles from the popular press that provide the stylized facts.

Patent Trolls

Likewise, I am currently considering writing a paper on "Patent Trolls". If the troll is the rightful owner of the bridge, why shouldn't he be entitled to charge a toll for a crossing? Does it matter that if didn't build the bridge? And just because you managed to sneak across in the dead of night, does that mean he can't come after you for payment? Just how far can I push this metaphor?
