Taylor "Tay" Jacobe is a junior at Rice University who has a passion for doing meaningful work which helps others.

Early Life

Tay spent the majority of her childhood (8/9ths of it, to be exact) in Sykesville, Maryland. Sykesville is a tiny town (population 5000) about 1 hour outside of D.C. and 45 minutes outside of Baltimore, but its claim to fame is its recent crowning as budgettravel.com's "Coolest Small Town in America." Her father works at the executive level for Healthy Directions, a company which sells health products via catalogues and online. Her mother is an entrepreneur of sorts, owning and running her own pet services business. She had a wonderful childhood, spending much of her time outdoors, playing musical instruments, and participating in extracurricular activities.

Education

Tay attended Century High School and earned her high school degree with specializations in Arts, Humanities, and Communications as well as Health, Human, and Social Services (her school allowed specializations in these "academies" in order to help students pursue career tracks). She is now in her junior year at Rice University, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Policy Studies along with minors in Business and Politics, Law, and Social Thought.

Organizational Involvement

Tay is External Vice President at Wiess College and spends much of her free time completing her duties for this position. In this capacity, she is responsible for connecting Wiess to outside resources, mainly through service opportunities and interaction with alumni and College Associates. She has served as an affiliate and fellow at Wiess' Orientation week in 2015 and 2016. Tay also acts as an Economics tutor at Wiess through the Wiess Mentors Society. She also is involved within sports, playing as goalie for the 2015 Rice Intramural champion Inner Tube Water Polo Team and running a half marathon in February 2016.

Work Experience

Tay spent two years serving as a Physical Therapy Aide in high school and during the summer after her freshman year in college. This past summer, she interned at the U.S. Department of State in their International Organizations Bureau, and within that, their Office of Human Rights and Humanitarian Efforts. There, she was responsible for drafting a wide array of public and internal documents, attending meetings and writing minutes, and keeping track of resolutions at the Human Rights Council and progress on the President's Refugee Summit. Concurrently, she also served as a Baker Institute Leadership Summer in D.C. Program Fellow. Now, she works as a Research Assistant at the Baker Institute's McNair Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and looks forward to future opportunities for growth. She is hoping to write a variety of blog series during her time here in order to educate both herself and others about issues which impact entrepreneurship and innovation.
