If Canada were to build nuclear power stations along the border and sell the power to the US, would it raise enough revenue so that Canadians never have to pay taxes again?

It appears: NO.

  • The US electricity market had revenues of approximately $350b in 2011. [1].
  • The average operating margin appears to be on the order of 10%. That is, net income from electricity was approximately $30b in 2011. [2]
  • Tax revenues (all sources) accounted for approximately 32% of GDP in Canada in 2011. [3]
  • Canadian GDP was $1.74t in 2011 [4]
  • Thus, Canadian tax revenues were approximately $557b in 2011. Of this, the breakdown appears to be:
    • 40% (~$220b) in income taxes
    • 10% (~$56b) in property taxes
    • 12% (~66.8b) for Canada pensions, EI and worker's comp.
